MANGROVE FOREST NABQ |
|
The zone of Nabq, situated a few km north of the international airport at Ras Nasrani, is, together with the island of
Tiran and the area of Ras Abu Galum between Dahab and Nuweiba, a veritable extension of the Ras Mohammed park .
These three protected areas are all of great biological and natural interest .
The zone of Nabq, which is spread over an area of 600 sq . metres, was declared a protected area in1992 .The delicate nature situation on this coastal strip justifies the tough environmental policy carried out by the park authorities .
These places of great beauty offer an alternative to the empty silence of the neighbouring desert .
Different types of birds can be observed here , ranging from white and gray herons to ospreys and storks .
At Nabq, there is the biggest mangrove forest in Sinai and the most northern one of the whole Red Sea Indian ocean region .
These mangrove trees, which belong to the Avicenia marina species, have the special feature of filtering sea water through their roots, discharging salt crystals via their leaves .
Nabq can be reached by using the track that starts after the airport at Ras Nasrani, with any type of vehicle . you must not leave this track as a part is surrounded by unmarked mine camps.
