The current town of SHARM EL-SHEIKH, the Arabic words sharm meaning bay and sheikh leader, and the name meaning "leader's bay", was built in 1968 above a high coral spur that dominates two large , sheltered bays, Sharm e-Maya on the west and sharm el-sheikh
on the east . Hotels and other tourist buildings then sprang up around the
beaches near sharm el -maya bay , and also some kilometers to the north around a wonderful bay located at the point where a large wadi ( Wadi el-Aat) joins the sea . this bay was named marsa el-Aat by the beduin living there but its internationally known today as naama bay . located only a few kilometers from Ras Nasrani international airport , it has become one of the most popular international tourist destinations due to its beauty . its climate and its geographical location .
In fact, Naama bay is not only the ideal departure point for a number of mountion and desert trips, but its also a center for underwater sports with its more than fifteen diving centres .
