GENERAL INFORMATION:

The peninsula of Sinai occupies a surface of 56,000 sq . metres stretching from the Aqabah Gulf to the Suez Gulf on the Red Sea . From a goegraphical point of view it is an extension of the Arab desert whilst politically it belongs to the Arab republic of Egypt it is a land of desert and mountains and has a rare beauty on account of its wonderful and extremely varied landscapes . There is a mountainous massif in the center of the peninsula of some 1500 metres, and the highest point of all is the Gabel Caterina at 2646 metres . The wild life of Sinai includes gazelles, hares , foxes rabbits, crows and partridges, whilst the flora includes over 500 different types, 33 of which are specific to the region. Climate and recommended traveling periods There is a typical desert climate in Sinai hot and dry , with large temperature variations between night and day , made even greater by the presence of mountains higher than, 2,000 metres. In some cases , the difference in temperature can be as great as 30 C . The best periods for traveling are autumn ( October-November ) and especially spring ( Marsh-April ) when the skies are at their clearest, the oasis vegetation at its greenest and the springs at their most bountiful. It is nevertheless useful to remember that even in spring it is very cold on the peaks of Gabel Musa and Gabel Caterina .
