STORKS IN SINAI |
|
Sinai is one of the main transit points for the migratory birds who head from Europe towards southern Africa at the beginning of autumn ( usually in the second half of August ) .
Thousands of storks, ( Ciconia ciconia, the best known among migratory birds), fill the Sinaitic skies in this period, and they rest around the Ras Mohammed bays and in the calm, shallow waters of the Nabq mangrove forest . many of them are exhausted when they reach Sinai, and some of them are injured and unable to continue their journey .
The Sinai wildlife project, a non-profit making organization of voluntary workers set up to protect the Sinaitic environment, feeds, treats and protects the birds, enabling them to continue their long journey .
This organization has also set-up a "save our storks" campaign, run by the American zoologist Jim Dinsmore and his wife .
Together with a small group of young volunteers of different nationalities, they organize a number of projects involving the collection of plastic from mineral water bottles, helping the local
Bedouin tribes and environmental education initiatives for school-age children .
The environmental organization Pianeta Sinai ("Planet Sinai") was set-up to support the action of the
Sinai Wildlife Project, carrying out an education and information campaign on the environment at the same time .
Thanks to the joint action of these two organizations, tourists can improve their knowledge of the complex Sinaitic ecosystem via free periodic conferences, and by visiting the Jim Dinsmore's veterinary hospital for storks and all migratory birds in the Sheikh coast area at
Sharm El -Sheikh .
